Jaw Surgery

Two women happy about the results of jaw surgery.Jaw surgery, sometimes referred to as orthognathic surgery, is a surgical procedure done to correct the jaw. This type of surgery is done in concurrence with orthodontics as to correct the positioning of the teeth after the bite is fixed. Correcting a jaw that does not properly align is one of the most common causes for jaw surgery. It is important to wait to undergo jaw surgery should it be necessary, until after growth has stopped: between 16 and 18 for males and 13 and 15 for females.
The Benefits of Jaw Surgery
Jaw surgery realigns the teeth and jaw to improve function and appearance. There are many benefits to undergoing jaw surgery should it be recommended by your dentist. For example:

Minimize the excessive breakdown and wear of the teeth

What to Expect from Your Jaw Surgery

If you require jaw surgery, the good news is that your Lake Norman Oral and Facial Surgeon can almost certainly perform the entire procedure from inside of your mouth, minimizing unsightly scars on the face. Your surgeon will make small incisions inside the mouth that will allow him to realign the jaw. Once the jaw is moved to the proper position he will then install screws and plates to hold the jaw in place. In some cases, bone grafting may be necessary, in which case your surgeon will remove bone from your hip, leg or ribs to allow him enough bone for realignment.

Where is surgery on my jaw performed?

Your jaw surgery will be performed in a hospital, where you can expect to stay for one to two days following the procedure. Complete recovery time should be expected to take anywhere from around three to six weeks.

In most cases, your orthodontist will place braces on the teeth prior to your jaw surgery. Once healing from the surgery is complete (six week minimum) your orthodontist will adjust your braces to properly align your teeth. You can expect that you will have to wear the braces anywhere from 9 to 18 months prior to your jaw surgery to level and align. The entire process, from orthodontics to surgery, will last anywhere from 12 to 24 months, depending on the severity of the situation.

Jaw surgery may be performed on the lower jaw, the upper jaw, the chin or both.
