Implant Anchored Dentures

If we had to ask, we have a strong feeling that many of you would readily admit that you desire to have a beautiful smile. Sadly, not everyone has a smile that makes them feel happy and confident. Millions of Americans are currently struggling with unwanted tooth loss, making it harder to flash their grin to the world. When you are missing an entire arch of teeth, it can become even more challenging to smile, too. We here at Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery compassionately understand what that must be like for you, which is why we are happy to offer implant anchored dentures to our valued patients.

What are Implant Anchored Dentures?

When a person loses a tooth, they have many different treatment options available to them. They can choose from a partial denture, a bride, or even a single tooth dental implant. However, losing an entire upper or lower arch of teeth – or even both – can make it harder to decide how to approach the tooth loss. That is where implant anchored dentures step in.

Unlike regular dentures, which are a removable type of dental restoration, an implant anchored denture is a permanent restoration option. They consist of a series of titanium posts (typically four are used per arch) that are surgically placed directly below the gumline, directly into the jawbone. Upon these posts, we place the overdenture, giving you a permanent replacement for your missing teeth without multiple surgical procedures.

What are the Benefits of Implant Anchored Dentures?

The benefits of implant anchored dentures are numerous. For instance, unlike regular dentures, they are permanent. That means that if you take good care of them, you can expect them to last your entire life. This is vastly different from regular dentures, which need to be replaced every seven to ten years. Implant anchored dentures give you all the benefits of single implants without needing to place each implant one by one.

Implant anchored dentures are also secure and completely restore your bite force. That means that you can eat all of your favorite foods without worrying about your dentures becoming dislodged. Unlike regular dentures, implant anchored dentures can also help prevent bone loss, too. Implant anchored dentures can be maintained like you would take care of your own natural teeth, which means that you do not need to worry about soaking your dentures or the embarrassment of being caught without your teeth.

Getting Implant Anchored Dentures

Implant anchored dentures do require surgery, unlike conventional dentures. We will start by making an incision directly into your gums to expose your jawbone. The titanium post will then be placed into your jawbone. We will suture the site closed and allow it to heal. This can take several months. Once the surgical site heals, we will then attach the overdenture to the abutments, the connector pieces that join the titanium post to your restoration.

You will want to continue to practice good oral hygiene after your procedure. Your procedure is more likely to be a success if you do not use tobacco products, as they increase your risk of failure. You will also want to maintain your regular appointments with us every six months, as well.
