What areas of my head are considered the maxillofacial region?Maxillofacial refers to the entire oral cavity including the face between the eyes and the upper teeth, the muscles controlling movement of the lower jaw, and even down into the upper neck.
Common Maxillofacial ProceduresThe most common maxillofacial procedures that we perform include:
Your mouth, and the entire oral region, comprises many tissues, both soft and hard. The soft tissues include the lips, inner cheeks, gums and your tongue. The hard tissues include your teeth and jawbone. Besides the hard and soft tissues, there is also various connective tissues that hold the your oral structures in place, as well as a lot of nerves and blood vessels. We refer to the relationship between your upper and lower teeth along with their with the jaw joints as your occlusion, or bite. To have a healthy functioning oral cavity, all of these systems need to work together in harmony. If some or all of these components do not work together in balance, your oral health then becomes compromised. Once it is compromised, it can cause joint pain, discomfort or even a loss of function. We want to alleviate that. At Lake Norman Oral and Facial Surgery, we can make all of the areas of your mouth work in unison as they should, providing you function and aesthetic.
