Neck Lift (Cervicoplasty)
As you get older, your skin changes. Oftentimes, these changes happen before you’re ready for them. You don’t feel old, but your skin betrays how you feel, which can lead to self-consciousness. One area where your age starts to show first is in the neck. Often referred to as “turkey neck,” the skin begins to sag. Dr. Haigney of Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery offers a solution: a neck lift. This procedure, also known as a cervicoplasty, uses liposuction and tightens the muscles in the neck, helping to restore it to its former appearance.
Benefits of a Neck Lift
Neck lift surgery has several benefits:
Before you get a neck lift, you must first schedule a consultation with Dr. Haigney. He will discuss your medical history with you and determine whether or not a neck lift is the right procedure. You will discuss your goals for the treatment and examine your neck. He will take photographs in order to compare to your neck after surgery. A list of pre-surgical instructions will also be given, allowing you to prepare.
After you have received an anesthetic, either intravenous sedation or general anesthesia, a small incision will be made underneath the chin, allowing for the scar to be hidden. From this point, Dr. Haigney will use liposuction to remove excess fat. The muscle in the neck, called the platysma, is tightened. Tissue is repositioned. When the procedure is complete, the incision is closed.
Recovery from a Neck Lift
When your procedure is complete, Dr. Haigney will give you specific instructions on how to care for the site and precautions to take in order to ensure proper healing. Some pain and swelling is to be expected. This can be minimized with the use of prescribed pain medications and rest. Keep your head elevated as well to avoid swelling. Don’t bend or twist your head too much. You should avoid using ice on any swelling as, at the neck, ice can restrict blood flow. The swelling should go down after a few weeks and as it disappears, you will be able to see the results of the procedure. The incision should heal completely after about six months.
