Why Are So Many People Afraid of Root Canals?
Posted on 5/23/2018 by Doctor Haigney
Many people have to have root canals done to save the integrity of their teeth, while others opt to have the teeth pulled. Not only because this is a long process, but many think it is a painful process to go through. Unlike a filling, a root canal sounds like a scary process that is going to be filled with a lot of pain. The fact of the matter is, the root canal gives you the same discomfort level as a traditional filling, the only exception is the infection within the pulp of your teeth is attacking and killing the nerves, which is triggering the pain. Root Canals are Not as Scary as You ThinkUnlike a simple filling, a root canal takes time to complete. Typically, a few hours. The reason many people used to fear root canals is because of the boredom and anxiety they would feel. You see, we didn't always have mp3 players that we could take with us everywhere we went. So, patients who got root canals, had nothing better to do than listen to the sound of an air driving drill, screaming away in their mouth. This led them to experience larger than normal cases of anxiety. Anxiety can lead to hypersensitivity and phantom pain. Thus, the myth that root canals are extremely painful was born. As our knowledge of tooth infections has grown our techniques and practices have evolved. For example, we prefer giving antibiotics to our patients prior to a root canal procedure. Why? We're so glad you asked. You see, the pain you experience is due to an infection in your pulp. Antibiotics, as we all know, fight infections. So, by giving you antibiotics prior to the procedure, we are already reducing the amount of discomfort you will be in because we are neutralizing the infection. This makes numbing the area far easier and much more effective, making you that much more comfortable for the procedure. If you are experiencing sudden tooth pain and think you might need a root canal, call our office today. We will be happy to help you get to the root of your pain problem....
