Facelift

There is much misunderstanding and misinformation about the rejuvenative surgical procedure called "Facelift" or "Rhytidectomy". An appropriately performed facelift rejuvenates the aged area of the face from the level of the eyes to the lower border of the lower jaw (including jowls) and in front of the ears to the nose and corners of the mouth. A facelift does not rejuvenate the corners of the mouth. A facelift does not rejuvenate the upper eyelids, eyebrows or forehead (accomplished by an endoscopic browlift). A facelift does not rejuvenate the center of the neck (accomplished by a cervicoplasty or necklift). Total facial rejuvenation usually requires a browlift, a facelift and a necklift. A successful facelift should look natural. Please call us for a consultation if you are considering getting a facelift in Cornelius, North Carolina.

Many factors cause the skin to wrinkle and sag; i.e., exposure to the sun, genetics as well as the natural aging process. Children and young adults have smooth, round faces due to fatty tissue that is evenly distributed throughout the contours of the face. As you age the skin sags and fits more loosely. These folds become prominent, especially around the chin, the jaw line and along the neck.

Before Surgery

We will evaluate your medical history in order to determine your overall health. Dr. Haigney will discuss the concerns you have about your appearance. After a thorough facial analysis, Dr. Haigney will then give you an expert diagnosis of the aged affects that have occurred to your face and neck regions.

We will discuss how your face can look and what you can expect from surgery. Our objective is to create a natural appearance that is pleasing to you. Photographs and computer imaging are performed to determine the amount of improvement after surgery.

We will provide you with preoperative instructions that may include the use of certain prescription skin care products several months prior to surgery in order to optimize the skin of your face and neck for the best outcome possible. The elimination of specific drugs containing aspirin, vitamin E and certain herbal substances several weeks before surgery to minimize excess bleeding is absolutely necessary. Smoking is forbidden several months prior to and after surgery. Antibiotics may be prescribed to prevent infection. You may be instructed to shampoo your hair the night before surgery with a prescription based shampoo.

Surgery

A rhytidectomy is performed in an outpatient setting at one of the local hospitals. Dr. Haigney is credentialed at both Carolina’s Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospitals in facial plastic surgery. These hospitals give Dr. Haigney’s patients reduced “cosmetic” rates for their surgeries. This allows the safety of surgery in a hospital system with board certified anesthesiologists and trained anesthetists taking care of the patient while Dr. Haigney concentrates on the procedure.

Incisions are made inside the hairline at the temple, running in front of the ear then around the earlobe and behind the ear, ending in the hair of the scalp. The loose skin is separated from underlying tissue; sagging muscles and connective tissues (SMAS) are tightened by creating a SMAS flap and removing the excess. The skin is re-draped with the excess skin being removed. In most cases, fatty deposits are removed from beneath the chin and neck. Small sutures are used to close the incisions. The procedure may take up to five hours depending on whether any other procedures are performed at the same time.
